South African HIV/Aids activist Zackie Achmat got married to his co-campaigner boyfriend at a ceremony attended by hundreds of guests, newspapers reported on Sunday.

Achmat (45), founder and chairperson of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), the country's main Aids lobby, married Dalli Weyers on Saturday at a colourful occasion near Cape Town, also attended by the city's mayor, Helen Zille, and former British high commissioner Ann Grant, the Sunday Times said.

Edwin Cameron, a Supreme Court of Appeal judge, officiated at the ceremony after being appointed by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Brigitte Mabandla to marry them, the Sunday Independent reported.

The two newspapers published photographs of the marriage, accompanied by a reception party.

South Africa in November 2006 became the first African country to legalise same-sex marriage.

The Civil Union Act allows for civil unions to be solemnised by way of either a marriage or a civil partnership. -- Sapa-AFP
