Sadtu elects new leaders

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) elected Thobile Ntola as president in Pretoria on Wednesday, the union said.

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) elected Thobile Ntola as president and Mugwena Maluleke as deputy general secretary in Pretoria on Wednesday, the union said.

Sadtu spokesperson Jon Lewis said Ntola was the union’s former deputy president. He was the principal of the Chuhekile Senior Secondary School where he taught science.

Ntola described his priorities as “to unite the organisation and to ensure that every member understands his/her role in transforming society with and for the working class”.

Maluleke was former Sadtu national treasurer.

He was the principal at Rodney Mokoena Junior Secondary School where he taught mathematics.

Maluleke said his priorities were “the training of regional administrative staff in bookkeeping and the incorporation of all branches into the union’s consolidated audited financial results”.

Both candidates have served Sadtu since its inception.

Sadtu has 235 000 members and represents two-thirds of teachers, Lewis said.—Sapa
