Skierlik killer denied leave to appeal

Johan Nel lost his application for leave to appeal the four life sentences he got for murdering four people in North West’s Skierlik informal settlement, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Friday.

Mmabatho High Court Judge Ronald Hendriks ruled that Nel had no prospect of another court coming to a different decision.

Nel received four life sentences for each of the four murders.

He was sentenced to an additional 68 years for attempted murder — seven years for each of the eight people he wounded, plus four years for each of the three people he shot at.

He also received five years for unlawful possession of a firearm and three years for possession of ammunition. A charge of damage to property was withdrawn.

Nel killed Enoch Tshepo Motshelanoka, 10, Anna Moiphitlhi, 31, her three-month-old baby Kegitlho Elizabeth Moiphitlhi, and Sivuyile Banani, 35, in a racially motivated shooting spree in the settlement near Swartruggens on January 14. — Sapa
