Ethiopian forces prepare to leave Somalia

Ethiopian troops who have been propping up Somalia’s government for the past two years are packing up to leave.

It was not immediately clear when the thousands of soldiers would depart. Ethiopia originally said they would leave by the end of December, but officials have since declined to give an exact date. It’s unlikely they would all leave at once.

But many soldiers were packing mattresses in the capital, Mogadishu, on Wednesday and loading trucks to leave the chaotic African nation.

Their departure comes amid a deepening political crisis. Somalia’s president resigned this week, saying he had lost control of the country to insurgents. — Sapa-AP
