Two in court for IFP leader’s murder

Two men arrested in connection with the murder of an Inkatha Freedom Party youth leader appeared in the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the case against Ben Mhlongo and Xolani Dlamini was postponed to January 20, for bail application.

She said the two were arrested on Friday for the murder of IFP Youth Brigade chairperson Shadrack Dube. The weapon they allegedly used to gun down Dube was found hidden in a car tyre.

Dube was shot dead near his house in Phumlani township in Hluhluwe on January 4.

The party’s chairperson in the Mkhanyakude district municipality, Alfred Mpontshane, described Dube’s murder as part of a systematic campaign to eliminate IFP leaders, derail its campaign and intimidate its supporters before the general elections.

”As the IFP, we are deeply saddened and disturbed by the untimely death of our comrade … while we do not yet know his assailants, we however note with concern the almost uniform pattern in the way he and some of our leaders have been assassinated.”

Dube was laid to rest on Sunday at Mfekayi in Hluhluwe. – Sapa
