A German journalist died in hospital on Monday from injuries suffered in a vehicle accident in the Free State, a German embassy spokesperson said.

The journalist died in the Medi-Clinic hospital in Bloemfontein where he had been treated for serious injuries sustained in an accident on the N1 highway near Winburg last week, spokesperson Martin Schaefer said.

"The second journalist treated at the hospital is in a stable but serious condition."

Schaefer said the embassy would not be releasing his name.

Four German journalists were travelling a Confederations Cup match in Bloemfontein when the accident happened last Wednesday. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

Schaefer said the two journalists who were lightly injured in the accident had already returned home. -- Sapa
