Violence flared up again at Siyathemba township in Balfour at the weekend where residents turned on foreign shop owners, Mpumalanga police said on Monday.

"They started last night [Sunday] and they burnt the shops of foreigners," said Sergeant Sam Tshabalala.

Tshabalala said he would have more information on the protests later on Monday.

In 2009 President Jacob Zuma visited Balfour following a series of protests at Siyathemba where residents demanded the removal of all Mbombela municipal councilors.

In July, residents took to the streets, burning tyres and barricading roads. About 30 foreign nationals had to stay the Balfour police station for safety reasons. -- Sapa

how many more times will this happen before we take xenophobia seriously? these are disgusting, unforgivable acts. the government dismisses it as criminal violence and nothing more. politicians are behind this. niren tolsi's reporting from kennedy road has warned us of this. it is an indictment on the government, the tripartite alliance and every decent, law-abiding south african that this can happen again, and again, and again in a post-apartheid country. what degenerate, barbaric, intolerant thing have we become?

Crime and service delivery are the two biggest threats to SA.
No country is going to invade, so cut back sharply on the "defence force".
