ACT Brumbies flank George Smith scored a late intercept try to secure a hard-fought 19-17 win over the Stormers in a Super 14 match at Newlands on Friday.

The South Africans replied with a try by loose forward Pieter Louw after the final hooter but fullback Joe Pietersen was unable to kick the touchline conversion for the draw.

The score was 6-6 at halftime and the teams were locked at 12-12 going into the 77th minute, with Brumbies flyhalf Matt Giteau and Pietersen each kicking four penalties.

However, Smith pounced on a loose pass by Stormers prop Brock Harris just outside the 22 to score under the posts.

Giteau then added the conversion for the Australians to end the Stormers’ unbeaten record in the third round. - Reuters
