The man found dead on Table Mountain has been identified as property developer Rob Taylor, Cape Town police said on Tuesday.

‘The body was identified by a family member late last night [Monday]. The family member made contact with the detective and identified the body as Rob Taylor,” said Captain Ezra October.

On Sunday around 8.15pm police received a call from search and rescue workers saying there was a body below the Table Mountain cable car.

An inquest docket was opened.

On Monday, October could not confirm whether Taylor committed suicide.

‘No note was found. All he had on him was a credit card. That is all we are working on.”

Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday that a man believed to be Taylor ascended Table Mountain in the cable car late on Sunday afternoon. Once at the top he took off his backpack and, arms outstretched, jumped.

Taylor, a well known Howick property developer, pilot and skydiving enthusiast, made headlines in January 2010 when he gave eight car guards at the cable station a brand new Audi worth over R2-million and R20 000 in cash.—Sapa
