Record number of entries for this year’s awards

The Mail & Guardian Greening the Future awards received 54 entries this year, the most in the history of the awards. The judges agreed that the overall standard of the entries was quite high. In the category “companies and organisations with innovative environmental strategies that improve business performance”, Pick n Pay emerged as overall winner. This category was sponsored by Ricoh. Old favourite Collect-a-Can won the “environmental best practice award” in the not-for-profit organisations category, which is sponsored by Nedbank. In the “water care” category, which deals with the critical issue of water footprints, SABMiller was rewarded for its innovations in lessening its water footprint. Unfortunately, the M&G received no entries for the “water management” category, which was aimed at municipalities.

The category that attracted the most entrants was “energy efficiency and carbon management”. There was fierce competition, but the Durban Greening 2010 initiative was chosen as the winner. This category is sponsored by ABB. In the “schools and institutions” category, which is aimed at innovative educational initiatives to protect our environment, the judges were looking for projects that demonstrate creativity and enthusiasm. The Midlands Meander Association Education Project walked away as winner. No awards were given in the “agriculture” category or the “most improved environmental practice” category because of a lack of entries. The “environmental journalist of the year” award, sponsored by ABB, aims to encourage green writing and reward grassroots journalism about the environment and the small story that makes a big difference. The category is still open and all nominations are welcome.
